A few weeks ago my friend Paddy (uber guru etc.) showed me some water kefir grains he’d got from here. At the time I thought to myself, oh this is just another mad thing Pads has got in to and probably faffy and complicated so I left it at that.
So I watched the vid (you should too) and was amazed at how bloody easy it looked. Water kefir grains are used to make, er, water kefir funnily enough. Kefir is a cultured drink that is teeming with good bacteria – the fundamentals of good health and super immunity. I’m all about the probiotics just now as you know so I leapt on to Kefir shop and bought a wee bag of water kefir grains. They are so cheap too at only £9.50 a bag!
Basically, you add them in to a jar with water and sugar or coconut water and they eat up all the sugar (over about 48 hours) turning the drink in to a SUPER healthy probiotic liquid elixir. I made mine with Dr Martin’s coconut water and added some coconut milk in too as I’d ran out of the water and the result was awesome. It just tastes like a champagne that’s maybe been left to sit out a while but still fizzes – best way I can think of describing it really.
I made some more last night which I added a few gojis and blueberries to.
Can you see it fizzing already?
I pop it in the dehydrator for a while to warm up the mix to get the probiotics in a growing frenzy! You need to treat the kefir with the love and respect it deserves. Afterall, they are ALIVE. Aw sweet, I like to talk to mine…moving on… Anyway, the beauty is that once you’ve made a batch you just fish the kefir grains out and make another batch – they will keep living as long as you do – if you treat them right! You’re not supposed to get them in contact with metal, don’t think they like metal 🙂
Here is an AWESOME kefir smoothie recipe for you – I’m drinking it now and it’s bloody orgasmic!
Blend (briefly till it’s purple with lots of flecks) 1 punnet blueberries with a 1-2 cups coconut milk (I use Dr Martin‘s), 1/2 teaspoon vanilla powder and 1 tbsp sweetener of choice (I used xylitol)
Add the above mix to your 1-2 cups of coconut kefir and stir in gently
Although it seems like having to wait 48 hours is a bit faffy, my plan is to buy a few more packets of grains and have them on rotation so that I have a super healthy drink every day. Piece of kefir piss as they say…
Enjoy! Let me know if you make your own amazing kefir recipe 🙂
