You know I get asked lots of questions about raw food all the time. Which is great! I love questions. Sometimes I get asked very random questions like “Are frozen prawns raw?” but most of the time I get asked fairly standard things. So I thought I’d throw together a wee blog with my top ten…
Where can I find out about local potlucks and meetups?
Little known fact but Scotland has the best raw food community in the world! True. Basically we all get together usually once or twice a month, bring some raw food (doesn’t have to be fancy shmancy), eat and have banter. Plenty of banter! Find out about where your nearest meetup is here.
Where do you get your protein from?
Hemp and chia! As well as nuts, seeds, leafy greens, algae, vegetables. I’m so bored of this question I refuse to say any more about it. Suffice it to say that there are other sources of protein other than meat and eggs. Plant based protein is awesome!
Do you take a B12 supplement?
Yes I do.
What is 80/10/10?
80/10/10 or 8/1/1 for short (how imaginative) is a type of raw food diet where you get the majority of your calories from carbs in the form of fruit. It’s great if you like to do lots of exercise, live in a hot country and have access to lots of fresh, ripe fruit. Personally, I don’t recommend it mostly because fruit today is unnaturally high in sugar and hybridized but hell, do whatever makes YOU happy. That’s all I care about. 🙂
What is a nut milk?
A nut milk (or seed milk) is when you blend nuts (or seeds) with water and then strain the mixture. It doesn’t taste like milk but depending on what nuts (or seeds…god this answer is starting to remind me of this…
Where was I? Yes, depending on what you use to make the milk, this will result in lots of different flavours of milk. Almonds are great as is coconut with brazils or hazelnuts. Hemp is by far my favourite and possibly the most nutritious. Simply blend one cup of nuts (or seeds) with 3 cups water and some sweetener and you have yourself a sextastic nut milk. Sorted! What is a green smoothie?
A green smoothie is a smoothie with green leafy vegetables in it like spinach or lettuce or anything else leafy and green. It’s fundamentally the best thing you can add into your diet. Blend some fruit with some greens and water. Check out the recipes in my free recipe book for the jist or this amazing post how to make the best green smoothie.
What’s the best raw food diet?
The one that works for you. Like anything in life you’ve got to experiment and be your own judge. The best way to start is just to start adding in raw food at a rate that’s comfortable for you. You might decide to stick to 50% raw and that’s totally fine. You might prefer juices to smoothies, superfoods or not, it’s up to you. Do whatever makes you feel good and don’t listen if anyone tells you you’re doing it wrong!
I don’t want to give up eating (insert random food item here)…What do I do?
You don’t have to give up anything you don’t want to. The raw food lifestyle isn’t about denial or punishment or eating something ‘bad’. There is no such thing as the Raw Food Police! Continue to eat whatever the god damn hell you want as well as whatever quantity of raw food feels right for you. There are no rules. And even if there were, rules are MADE to be broken baby YEAH!!
What did you do with the spinach in your spinach bath?
Yes really, I get asked this more than you’d ever truly believe. It went in the compost. Contrary to what you might think I’m not accustomed to bathing in my dinner before consuming it…
