Sometimes we have a tendency to view raw food as the answer to all our problems – as the ultimate goal to aspire to.
There’s nothing wrong with having a goal or aspiration per se, but if you’re investing your happiness in some future point that will never come, you’re doomed to be miserable.
“Once I am raw I will be happy”; “I will have made it”; “I will be a superhero”.
But hang on, what do I mean by ‘a future point that will never come‘?
Just exactly what I said. This ‘raw foodist’ point, this place you’re desperate to get to, it doesn’t happen. Yes, really! No raw food angels heralding from the sky, no majestic music, no blaze of golden light and no fucking parade. Just you, one year down the line…five years…ten years…
Making a smoothie. Drinking a smoothie. Spilling chia seeds everywhere. Finding kale crisps in your tights. Wishing the juicer would clean itself.
Sure, the longer you do the whole raw food thang, the more raw food you’ve eaten but that doesn’t make you a raw foodist.
I’m sure you’ve heard many a time ‘raw food is about the journey not the destination‘. Well let me take that a step further. There is no fucking destination. I repeat:
THERE IS NO DESTINATION!
You don’t wake up one morning and all of a sudden you’re a raw foodist. You don’t ever get ‘there’.
In each moment we make a choice: to eat raw food or not.
When you choose the raw food, you are a raw foodist.
That is being a raw foodist – making conscious choices at each mealtime to eat raw food.
You are a raw foodist when you are eating raw food.
Not because you’ve sacrificed a cucumber and sworn an oath to the Gods of cooked food never to eat another meal heated above 115 degrees! Not because you’ve eaten raw for forty seven and three quarter consecutive meals. Not because you’ve gone any amount of time without eating cooked food. Time doesn’t even come in to it.
No. No. No.
Now. Now. Now.
Now is the moment you are a raw foodist, because you are eating raw.
So now you know.
