So I was having a conversation yesterday with my beloved and then later with my friend David (who may or may not be a covert Illuminati Ninja) about the relative qualifications, authority and transparency of raw food gurus. Love them or hate them, there are quite a few out there, some more prolific than others and each with their own version of the raw food story to
A lot of people don’t like the term ‘guru’ but there’s no getting away from the fact that in this raw food movement there are acknowledged ‘leaders’, chief proponents and people with a great deal of knowledge and expertise. This is what a guru is.
So here’s what I think about the whole raw food guru thing…
YES they have something to sell. Of course they do. Newsflash: most people in this world are selling products or information which they believe in. Hell, even I’m at it. Does that mean that the information that they have to share is not valuable or has no truth to it? No, I don’t think so. Should you believe EVERYTHING they say? No, I don’t think so. You take the bits that resonate with you and you leave the rest. Simple. If you feel compelled after a talk to turn to prostitution to fund all the potions and powders you ‘need’ then that’s an alarm bell right there.
Common sense, people. Common sense.
I’ve been duped in to buying something I didn’t need or was a bit iffy, but you know what? The only person responsible for that as far as I’m concerned is me. It’s up to me not to believe everything I’m spoon-fed. Do the research and make informed choices. Speak to other people digging this scene and take it from there. Raw food gurus are perhaps your first port of call, but they shouldn’t be your last.
It’s not all peace and love and shiny happy unicorns in the raw food guru sphere. Newsflash: these are real people. They’re just as fucked up and mental as you and I. Sarah Best has an excellent blog which cuts through some of the bullshit and teaches you about things you may or may not be aware of within the raw food world. Check it out. Get informed. It’s really not important who’s talking to who or who’s shagging who but just know that behind that veil of love and light lies real human emotions, insecurities and flaws. Big wows.
Qualifications. Yes, a lot of the raw food gurus aren’t “qualified”. Let me tell you this, I’ve forgotten way more than I learned during my degree and two post-grads. Yes, two. Clever, aren’t I? Just because I’m qualified doesn’t mean I really know jack shit. It means I was able to memorise enough bullshit in the run up to an exam or sit up all night caffeined out my nut to write an essay. My point is that qualified nutritionists may be qualified but still know less than people that study this shit FOR FUN! I understand qualifications are there for a reason, to protect us stupid people out there that can’t figure shit out and just trust what we’re told. I think that just because someone isn’t qualified, doesn’t mean you can’t trust a word they say…
Raw food gurus are not consistent. Newsflash: neither are you. Everyone changes. If you aren’t changing you must be dead. We’re all just going along our little path mixing shit up and seeing what works for us. Yes, raw food gurus might be doing something one minute and something else the next. They might even decide to eat pizza for a bit. This is a good thing as far as I’m concerned. It teaches you that you need to do your own thing. We’re all human. Fuck it, let them eat cake. Doesn’t mean shit to me. Hell, I ate cake last night. That doesn’t mean that I don’t know how to rock it with a green juice. It doesn’t mean that I don’t dig raw food and the whole health thing. It just means I ate cake. I indulged in unconscious eating. It happens. Should I be transparent about that? Of course. Are most raw food gurus transparent about what they’re really eating? I don’t think so. Does that mean they’re untrustworthy? Not necesarrily. We’re all just dealing with our own stuff. If you’re that busy thinking about what they’re doing you’re not paying enough attention to yourself.
Bottom line. These people, love them or hate them, have been instrumental in bringing YOU a great deal of information and products that otherwise wouldn’t be out there. Should we be hating on them? No. I’m really fucking thankful and grateful to every single one for walking their walk, talking their talk, arsing things up and just EXISTING because they’re part and parcel of why I’m on this journey.
