Can raw food fast track your Spirituality?
This is such a huge topic I couldn’t possibly cover it all without gaining the world record for longest blog post ever! Apart from anything else, I could probably spend the next fortnight just trying to put in to words what Spirituality actually is!
For me, Spirituality is conscious awareness and a feeling of connection with all that is…an understanding or belief in something bigger than me, which exists in me and everything else, of which I am a part of. Ok now I’m confusing myself and need a wee lie down 🙂
I guess it’s something I can’t put in words, I just feel it…
What I can do in this blog post is share my own experience of the connection I feel exists between my eating raw food and my own spirituality. Those of you who read my book Me Raw: You Cooked will have gained an insight through my diary entries as to my awakening spirituality in the early days of eating raw. I think it’s pretty clear to those who read the book that during that time I was quite confused and almost fearful of the awakening occuring at that time. (You can also pick up on some of the goings on in this blog post which is my old Bebo blog)
The reason I was a bitty scared is because prior to going raw I didn’t have a spiritual bone in my body, in fact, I couldn’t have been more unspiritual if I tried! On top of that it was a completely unexpected side effect. Sure I knew that there could be some pretty amazing transformations take place, but I didn’t expect to start feeling in tune with the cosmos! 🙂
Although I’d say that during the early stages of being raw I experienced the greatest and fastest awakening of my own awareness and spirituality, the process (if you can call it that) doesn’t appear to have stopped. If anything, when I seriously up my game and continue to refine and adapt my diet to my own individual body’s needs or when I partake in certain things like eating a lot of wild foods or juicing for example, I can experience further shifts in both my spirituality and awareness. Sometimes these are quite subtle and other times I’m launched head first in to an awareness of things I hadn’t realised before. It’s a beautiful thing that never fails to surprise and delight!
What’s it all about then?
Having done a bit of research on other people’s experiences with raw food and spirituality, I’ve come to the conclusion that there are two things really going on. Firstly, eating a lot of raw foods means eating a lot of high energy, high vibrational foods in their natural (nature) state which helps to put you in touch with your own true nature and supports your body in the highest way possible. When you’re eating more water-rich foods life seems to err, flow better. Synchronicities abound and it just seems as if everything is better connected.
Secondly, if you’re eating a lot of raw foods the chances are you’re not eating foods that contain toxins that interfere with your body and therefore your awareness (I’m talking highly processed or junk foods). Eating food that contains lots of chemicals or that weighs you down is going to make you feel less than vibrant. When you don’t feel good it’s less likely you’ll feel anything let alone interconnectedness!
Would I have become as spiritual as I am now without the raw food?
There’s no way of knowing for sure but I don’t think so. Mainly because when I eat a lot of cooked or unhealthy foods I instantly feel less in tune with myself and my surroundings. That’s not to say I go back to how I was before I went raw, but the awareness certainly lessens.
I don’t think you don’t have to be 100% raw to access your spirituality and of course there are many spiritual people in the world who cook their food and eat whatever they want. I do think however that eating more raw food enhances what you’ve already got going on and even if you don’t feel spiritual, you will feel amazing!
hey em, i’d just like to say what a fantastic blog this is! every article i’m like OH MY GOD YES she’s so right! i have only recently gone raw – over the past year, since i started to practice yoga and meditation more, and got involved with more social and political activism, i have slowly gone through from omnivore to vegetarian to vegan to raw. i really feel like they all go together: awareness of everything around you and how it is all connected, and there are just moments when you realise what the next part of your behaviour is that needs changed. and it’s so fun to challenge yourself and your habits so fundamentally! i feel GREAT all the time, even though in my final year of uni i *should* be more stressed than ever. thank you so much for your hilarious insights and inspiration =D
oh wow, thank you so much emily! it means a lot to me to hear your kind words, albeit i can’t actually hear them…you know what I mean!
you’re right, it is all interconnected and the great news is that the more you follow this path, in whatever way it takes you, the more you see the connectedness and beauty in it all. i’m so grateful for the awareness when it comes to me 🙂
i’m glad you feel great, long may it continue and good luck in your final year. seems like donkeys ago i was doing it 😉 x
