Ok, bit of a crazy title for a blog post granted but it’s the first thing that came in to my mind and well, sometimes it’s good to go with first things that come in to your mind. Moving on. What do I mean by raw food anchors? I’m referring to the things that keep you stable in the raw food lifestyle whilst everything else goes a bit awry. Awry times for me tend to be when I’m away from home and my stupendous raw food kitchen (read vitamix – god I miss my vitamix).
I’ve been in Iceland for just over two months now and in that time the % of cooked food I’ve been eating has swayed from anything from 0% to 100%. This readers, is the stormy sea of raw food eating when you’re away from home.
I remember a friend of mine confiding that he had been eating a lot of cooked food but that he was still making sure he drank a green drink every day. I remember thinking that this was an excellent approach, that holding on to just one thing can keep you still in the game so to speak.
What I have been able to do is anchor myself in the raw lifestyle by using a few things that work for me. Having these things show up consistently whilst I’m on my travels makes sure I don’t forget what I’m all about, even when I’m lost in a sea of cooked food!
So what are these things?
Even though they are rather pricey here there have been days where I’m all about the greens, even if it blows my daily budget, I just gotta have them. Big bags of fresh greens like spinach, mixed lettuce and rocket have been real life savers.
2. GREEN SMOOTHIES!
Again, being able to dive in to a big pint of green smoothie heaven has been a respite from the mind fog of cooked food I’ve been eating. There’s nothing more satisfying than glugging down something so green it should be illegal!
3. RAW CHOCOLATE
Ok so this is the polar opposite of the greens but again, having something chocolatey and comforting – particularly in the shape of an Om Bar – has been awesome. I’m quite sure if I didn’t have access to raw chocolate here I might’ve flown home 7 weeks ago… 🙂
4. RAW CAKE
Yes, there are a few places you can buy raw cake in Iceland. Naughty but oh so nice and probably the best shaped raw anchor you can find or your money back…what am I talking about?
5. GLO RESTAURANT
This cheeky wee place has a raw item on the menu every day and means that I can partake in a gorgeous raw meal any time the mood takes me…apart from Sunday…cos it’s shut on a Sunday.
6. FROZEN COCONUT MEAT
Odd one this eh? Being able to buy frozen coconut meat means I can make splendid coconut based raw desserts in the house with my trusty blender. I’m pretty sure this stuff is available back home in Glasgow, we just haven’t looked for it? Need to check with See Woo whether they sell it…
7. WILD FOOD
There is an abundance of wild food growing here just asking for the picking. There’s a variety of sorrel (pic below) that I’m absolutely ADDICTED to, not the leaves but the flower. It tastes exactly like sour raspberries! That and the dandelion leaves have kept me firmly rooted (har har) in the wild and raw food picking I miss back home.
So yeah, that’s my list. Not a great deal on it but enough to make sure I don’t go all mental on the cooked food malarkey 🙂
